The city is located on both sides of the Malacca River near its mouth on the Straits of Malacca.

The urban morphology of Melaka has to be understood since the inception of the city,through the perspectives of the cosmopolitan communities, the colonial powers as well as the Malaysiangovernment post-independence.

The history of the city

Malacca was founded by Parameswara, also known as Iskandar Shah. He found his way to Malacca around 1402 where he found a good port on the strategically located narrowest point of the Malacca Straits.
